The Adulteress: A Variation of The Scarlet Letter

In 1642 Boston, Emma Baker, a young woman had a child out of wedlock. Emma thought she was a widow, but her husband, Mason Cox, arrives in Boston very much alive and hides his identity. Emma is forced to wear the scarlet letter A on her dress as punishment for her adultery. After Ms. Baker refuses to name her child’s father, Cox becomes hell bent on finding out who it is. After learning the actual father is a saintly minister who is also the leader of those trying to force her to name the child’s father, Cox torment him. Stricken by guilt, Anderson the actual father becomes increasingly ill. Emma herself is found to be an heroine capable of taking care of herself and never truly repentant for committing adultery with the minister. She believes that their conceived by their deep love for each other. While initially everyone detested her actions, her dignity and compassion brought many to love her.
